International Energy Agency Chief Economist Dr. Fatih Birol was at ICCI 2010

International Energy Agency Chief Economist Dr. Fatih Birol who delivered a speech during the press meeting held at ICCI 2010 reviewed the recent developments in the global oil and natural gas markets, the current status of the international meeting for climate change and the trends in the world and Europe regarding nuclear and renewable energy and provided insight as to how these developments might influence the energy sector in Turkey. Birol said “As you all know, recently, it has only been the developing countries that showed an interest for nuclear energy and new plants have been constructed mostly in these countries (like China, India etc.). On the other hand, in the developed OECD countries there hasn’t been any new construction for long. But what we see now is that European countries as well are turning their head back to nuclear and there are ongoing efforts or at least discussions to establish new facilities. It looks like this situation would further benefit the government that wants to establish a nuclear power plant. Even though they are not in the same category, this change might cause the government, with already decreased motivation for renewable energy, to be skeptical about the issue. “
